Cultural Activies - September 26

Now that you have learned how to greet, introduce yourselves, and describe who you are, it is time to see, in practice, how language influences a country’s culture — and vice versa.

The summer course is a fully immersive experience and would not be complete without giving you a glimpse of who we were, who we are, and what drives us.

Shall we begin?

Day 10 - Samouco Salterns

Across the Tagus estuary, there is currently only one active saltern in operation — Marinha do Canto — where salt is still produced using traditional methods.

This visit offers insight into the history and cultural significance of this activity in Alcochete, demonstrating how a saltern operates, from seawater being channelled through tidal inlets during high tide to the formation of salt crystals.

Participants will also have the opportunity to experience being a salt worker for a day and collect sea salt from the crystallisation ponds.

Day 15 - Museum of Aljube Resistance and Freedom

The Museum of Aljube Resistance and Freedom is dedicated to the memory of the fight against the dictatorship and the resistance in favour of freedom and democracy.

It is a municipal museum that intends to fill a gap in the Portuguese museological fabric, by projecting the appreciation of this memory onto the construction of a responsible citizenship, and by taking on the struggle against the exonerating and, so often, complicit amnesia of the dictatorship that we faced between 1926 and 1974.

Day 17 - Fronteira Palace and Gardens

The Fronteira palace is one of the most beautiful seventeenth-century monuments in Lisbon. It holds the largest collection of seventeenth-century “azulejos” (Portuguese tiles) preserved in situ. It was built around 1670 and was used as a second residence and hunting lodge by the Mascarenhas family before the Lisbon earthquake.  The family moved to Benfica in 1755, after their main downtown residence was destroyed in the disaster.

The palace is an ancient manor house preserved in a form very close to its original design. Classified as a national monument, it is also the home of the descendants of Dom João de Mascarenhas, the first Marquis of Fronteira, who ordered the construction of the palace. This is one of the many charms of the place, giving it a human touch and contributing to its special atmosphere.

In addition to the long-term exhibition, which shows the evolution of the city from prehistoric times to the end of the 20 th century, the Museum of Lisbon - Pimenta Palace has two temporary exhibition areas (Black Pavilion and The Backroom), a documentation centre, shop and gardens with a kiosk.
