1. Eligibility
Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) courses are intended for young people or adults who do not have Portuguese as their mother tongue or second language and who wish to begin or continue its study. Except in duly justified cases, applicants must be at least 17 years of age, have knowledge of the Latin alphabet, and be literate.
2. Agreement (teaching/learning)
2.1. The applicant/student must provide their personal data correctly and in full and is responsible for keeping such data up to date.
2.2. The rules and conditions set out below cover not only the provision of teaching (academic activity), but also other services, prior or subsequent to the teaching activity (non-academic and/or administrative activities), which are essential for the Parties.
2.3. This document must be read in full. If the applicant does not agree with any of its provisions, they should not submit their application.
2.4. By submitting the enrolment, the student accepts the conditions set out herein.
3. Enrolment
3.1. Enrolment must be completed no later than 15 working days before the start of the course or within the established and published deadline.
3.2. On the application platform, the applicant must complete and upload all the required information and documents. All data are personal and non-transferable, and the Institute of Culture and Portuguese Language (ICLP) reserves the right to reject applications that do not comply with these requirements.
3.3. Following the validation referred to in the foregoing sub-paragraph, the student may request a declaration of enrolment, which shall be issued in PDF format within a maximum period of 20 working days from the date of the request. The declaration shall contain only the following information, and no additional information shall be included: student’s name, nationality, identification document number, course, course dates, course location, date and digital signature.
3.4. The first copy of the declaration referred to in the foregoing sub-paragraph shall be issued free of charge. The second copy shall cost €5 (five euros), and the third and any subsequent copies shall cost €20 (twenty euros).
3.5. The declaration of enrolment shall remain valid while the student is enrolled and shall automatically become invalid in the event of prolonged unjustified absence (exceeding 15 consecutive days of classes) or withdrawal.
3.6. The ICLP shall not, under any circumstances, be responsible for any procedure relating to the acquisition of travel authorisation, a student visa, or any other procedure that may prevent the student from attending the course, nor shall it contact other institutions directly on behalf of the student in relation to such matters.
4. Payment
4.1. On submission of the application, the student shall pay the total tuition fee in full, failing which the enrolment shall not be considered complete. This amount is non-refundable.
4.2. Tax documents shall be issued on the basis of the information provided by the student in the application form (for example, name, tax number, and issuing country).
4.3. Where an invoice or receipt is required in the name of another entity (for example, a company, school, association, or guardian), the relevant details must be provided immediately before submission of the application, under the option «Add billing details».
5. Withdrawals/Refunds
5.1. In the event that the course is cancelled by the ICLP, any amounts paid by the student shall be refunded in full.
5.2. In the event of withdrawal from the course by the student, irrespective of the grounds, the amount paid upon enrolment shall not be refunded.
5.3. Transfer of enrolment or of amounts paid to another course or to a different course period shall not be permitted.
6. Assessment of Language Level/Placement in Classes
6.1. This course comprises a total of 80 teaching hours. Each course period (80 hours) corresponds to one level of proficiency (A1 – beginner level to C2 – proficiency level), the syllabus and learning objectives of which are defined on the basis of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
6.2. Determination of the language level to be attended and placement of students in classes shall fall within the exclusive competence of the ICLP Pedagogical Coordination.
6.3. Students who have never studied Portuguese shall be placed in a beginner-level class.
6.4. Students who have previously studied Portuguese, whether formally or informally, and provided that this information is included in their linguistic profile, shall undertake a placement test for assignment to an appropriate class.
6.5. Students who have attended an ICLP course in the preceding period, or who submit certification from CAPLE – Centro de Avaliação de Português Língua Estrangeira (https://caple.letras.ulisboa.pt/), with their application, shall be exempt from this test. Following validation of the enrolment, such certification may no longer be considered.
6.6. Upon request, and provided the student is attending the course, a declaration of attendance may be issued. The declaration shall contain only the following information: student’s name, nationality, identification document number, course, course dates, course location, date and signature.
6.7. The first copy of the declaration referred to in the foregoing sub-paragraph shall be issued free of charge. The second copy shall cost €5 (five euros), and the third and any subsequent copies shall cost €20 (twenty euros).
6.8. The declaration of enrolment shall remain valid while the student is enrolled and shall automatically become invalid in the event of prolonged unjustified absence or withdrawal.
7. Assessment/Issuance of Certificate
7.1. Students who attend at least 75% of classes and complete the required assessment components shall receive a final assessment at the end of the course. Where the assessment corresponds to a pass (equal to or higher than 10 marks on a scale of 0 to 20), a certificate of successful completion shall be issued.
7.2. Students who attend at least 75% of classes but do not achieve a pass are entitled to a declaration of participation, upon request.
7.3. The first copy of the certificate or declaration of participation shall be issued free of charge. The second copy shall cost €5 (five euros), and the third and any subsequent copies shall cost €20 (twenty euros).
7.4. The certificate may be issued and sent within a period of between 1 and 3 months from the last day of the course.
8. Attendance
8.1. Arrival more than fifteen minutes after the start of a class or departure more than fifteen minutes before its end shall be considered an absence. Exception shall be made in duly justified individual cases arising from force majeure.
8.2. Late entry to the course shall be permitted only up to the end of the first week of classes. Thereafter, the student shall no longer be entitled to attend the course.
9. Institutional Insurance Policy
Students are covered by an institutional insurance policy applicable to incidents occurring within the School of Arts and Humanities or outside its premises in connection with activities related to class attendance.

10. Personal Data
10.1. Personal data shall be processed in accordance with the applicable rules in force, in particular the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 (GDPR)), and under the terms set out below.
10.2. Personal data and anonymised linguistic data may be used for institutional research purposes. Data shall be considered anonymised where they do not permit any form of identification, making it impossible to associate the data with a specific individual.
10.3. For the purposes of the GDPR, personal data shall mean any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person (data subject), including elements specific to their physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural, or social identity.
10.4. Examples of personal data include: a) first name and surname; b) address; c) email address (for example, firstname.lastname@company.com); d) identification document number; e) location data (for example, the location function on a mobile phone); f) IP address (Internet Protocol); g) browsing data (cookies).
10.5. Examples of data not considered personal include: a) company registration number; b) institutional email address (for example,info@company.com ); c) anonymised data.
10.6. Under the GDPR, “consent” of the data subject shall be valid only where it constitutes “any freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous indication of the data subject’s wishes by which he or she, by a statement or by a clear affirmative action, signifies agreement to the processing of personal data relating to him or her” (Article 4(11)). By accepting this Privacy Policy, the user provides consent in accordance with the law.
10.7. In the context of specific tasks related to enrolment or the acquisition of services, student data may be processed jointly with other entities, in particular with the Associação para o Desenvolvimento da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa [Association for the Development of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon], for example, for invoicing purposes. In such cases, the data may be transmitted to this subcontracted entity and to other third parties solely for the purposes set out herein or in compliance with legal obligations.
10.8. Some personal data are indispensable for the provision of the services, such as name, date of birth, contact details, photograph, and identification number. Where such data are not provided or are insufficient or incorrect, the ICLP shall be unable to provide the services.
10.9. Under no circumstances shall the ICLP provide the user’s personal data to entities not strictly connected with the provision of services.
11. Matters Not Provided For Herein
All matters not provided for herein shall be submitted for consideration to the Pedagogical Coordination or the Management of the ICLP of the School of Arts and Humanities and/or to the Management of the Association for the Development of the School of Arts and Humanities.

4.3. Tax documents shall be issued on the basis of the information provided by the student in the application form (for example, name, tax number, and issuing country).

Transfer of enrolment from a first-semester course to a second-semester course within the same academic year shall be permitted, provided that all of the following conditions are met: i) the request is submitted in writing using the appropriate form, available on the ICLP website; ii) the request is submitted no later than 10 working days before the start of the course from which the student is withdrawing; iii) the tuition fee has been paid in full.
5.5. Where a transfer request is submitted in accordance with the foregoing sub-paragraph, an amount equivalent to 25% of the total tuition fee shall be retained.
5.6. Following approval of the transfer, the applicant shall submit an application for the subsequent semester, complete payment of the tuition fee within the prescribed deadline, and comply with all other applicable enrolment requirements, in particular the relevant enrolment deadline.
5.7. Following a transfer of enrolment, the enrolment fee shall not, under any circumstances, be refunded.

Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) courses for Erasmus are intended for students participating in the Erasmus+ Programme, Key Action 1, Student and Staff Mobility in Higher Education at the University of Lisbon, in the relevant academic year, who do not have Portuguese as their mother tongue or second language and who wish to begin or continue its study.
2. Agreement (teaching/learning)
2.1. The applicant/student must provide their personal data correctly and in full and is responsible for keeping such data up to date.
2.2. The rules and conditions set out below cover not only the provision of teaching (academic activity), but also other services, prior or subsequent to the teaching activity (non-academic and/or administrative activities), which are essential for the Parties.
2.3. This document must be read in full. If the applicant does not agree with any of its provisions, they should not submit their application.
2.4. By submitting the enrolment, the student accepts the conditions set out herein.
3. Enrolment
3.1. Enrolment must be completed no later than 15 working days before the start of the course or within the established and published deadline.
3.2. On the application platform, the applicant must complete and upload all the required information and documents. All data are personal and non-transferable, and the Institute of Culture and Portuguese Language (ICLP) reserves the right to reject applications that do not comply with these requirements.
3.3. The applicant shall indicate their preferred timetable in the field entitled “Course Prerequisite”.
3.4. During the first week of classes and upon presentation of the official timetable of the degree programme attended by the student at the respective School of the University of Lisbon, the ICLP may consider a request for a change of class. However, such change shall be subject to documented timetable overlap and availability of places.
4. Payment
4.1. On submission of the application, the student shall pay the total tuition fee in full, failing which the enrolment shall not be considered complete. This amount is non-refundable.
4.2. Tax documents shall be issued on the basis of the information provided by the student in the application form (for example, name, tax number, and issuing country).
4.3. Where an invoice or receipt is required in the name of another entity (for example, a company, school, association, or guardian), the relevant details must be provided immediately before submission of the application, under the option «Add billing details».
5. Withdrawals/Refunds
5.1. In the event that the course is cancelled by the ICLP, any amounts paid by the student shall be refunded in full.
5.2. Refund of the course fee shall be due only in the event of timetable incompatibility between the Portuguese as a Foreign Language course and the respective degree programme attended at the University of Lisbon. In such case, the request shall be submitted in writing and accompanied by a copy of the official timetable issued by the respective School of the University of Lisbon.
5.3. In the event of withdrawal from the course by the student, for any reason other than that referred to in sub-paragraph 5.2., the course fee shall not be refunded.
5.4. Transfer of enrolment or of amounts paid to another course or to a different course period shall not be permitted.
6. Assessment of Language Level / Placement in Classes
6.1. This course comprises a total of 56 teaching hours. Each course period (56 hours) corresponds to one sub-level of proficiency (A1 – beginner level to C2 – proficiency level), the syllabus and learning objectives of which are defined on the basis of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
6.2. Determination of the language sub-level to be attended and placement of students in classes shall fall within the exclusive competence of the ICLP Pedagogical Coordination.
6.3. Students who have never studied Portuguese shall be placed in a beginner-level class.
6.4. Students who have previously studied Portuguese, whether formally or informally, and provided that this information is included in their linguistic profile, shall undertake a placement test for assignment to an appropriate class.
6.5. Students who have attended an ICLP course in the preceding period, or who submit certification from CAPLE – Centro de Avaliação de Português Língua Estrangeira (https://caple.letras.ulisboa.pt/), with their application, shall be exempt from this test. Following validation of the enrolment, such certification may no longer be considered.
6.6. The opening of a class requires a minimum of 15 enrolments. If this number is not reached for the intended course, the course may be cancelled by the ICLP.
7. Assessment / Issuance of Certificate
7.1. Students who attend at least 75% of classes and complete the required assessment components shall receive a final assessment at the end of the course. Where the assessment corresponds to a pass (equal to or higher than 10 marks on a scale of 0 to 20), a certificate of successful completion, with the indication of ECTS credits, shall be issued.
7.2. Students who attend at least 75% of classes but do not achieve a pass are entitled to a declaration of participation, upon request.
7.3. The issuance of certificates is the responsibility of the Reitoria [central administration] of the University of Lisbon. Pending completion of this process, and where required, the student may request a statement of results from the ICLP.
8. Attendance
8.1. Arrival more than fifteen minutes after the start of a class or departure more than fifteen minutes before its end shall be considered an absence. Exception shall be made in duly justified individual cases arising from force majeure.
8.2. Late entry to the course shall be permitted only up to the end of the second week of classes. Thereafter, the student shall no longer be entitled to attend the course.
9. Personal Data
9.1. Personal data shall be processed in accordance with the applicable rules in force, in particular the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 (GDPR)), and under the terms set out below.
9.2. Personal data and anonymised linguistic data may be used for institutional research purposes. Data shall be considered anonymised where they do not permit any form of identification, making it impossible to associate the data with a specific individual.
9.3. For the purposes of the GDPR, personal data shall mean any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person (data subject), including elements specific to their physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural, or social identity.
9.4. Examples of personal data include: a) first name and surname; b) address; c) email address (for example, firstname.lastname@company.com); d) identification document number; e) location data (for example, the location function on a mobile phone); f) IP address (Internet Protocol); g) browsing data (cookies).
9.5. Examples of data not considered personal include: a) company registration number; b) institutional email address (for example,info@company.com ); c) anonymised data.
9.6. Under the GDPR, “consent” of the data subject shall be valid only where it constitutes “any freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous indication of the data subject’s wishes by which he or she, by a statement or by a clear affirmative action, signifies agreement to the processing of personal data relating to him or her” (Article 4(11)). By accepting this Privacy Policy, the user provides consent in accordance with the law.
9.7. In the context of specific tasks related to enrolment or the acquisition of services, student data may be processed jointly with other entities, in particular with the Associação para o Desenvolvimento da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa [Association for the Development of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon], for example, for invoicing purposes. In such cases, the data may be transmitted to this subcontracted entity and to other third parties solely for the purposes set out herein or in compliance with legal obligations.
9.8. Some personal data are indispensable for the provision of the services, such as name, date of birth, contact details, photograph, and identification number. Where such data are not provided or are insufficient or incorrect, the ICLP shall be unable to provide the services.
9.9. Under no circumstances shall the ICLP provide the user’s personal data to entities not strictly connected with the provision of services.
10. Matters Not Provided For Herein
All matters not provided for herein shall be submitted for consideration to the Pedagogical Coordination or the Management of the ICLP of the School of Arts and Humanities and/or to the Management of the Association for the Development of the School of Arts and Humanities.
